Ron Schuster
Ron Schuster and his wife Penny have maintained a studio and gallery in Nashville, Indiana for over
30 years. The couple moved there after college and quickly became part of a renaissance of the historic Brown County
art colony. WIth its roots in impressionist landscape painting, the area was revitalized by an
influx of young artists and crafts workers in the 1970s and 1980s. Long a tourist destination,
the area now draws over three million visitors each year.
Their rural studio is housed in an old one room schoolhouse with a separate building serving as the
hot glass shop. Being self-taught has allowed Ron to follow his own interests while exploring the
medium of glass. Starting with stained glass and eventually adding hot glass work, Ron has worked in
many styles and techniques over the years. With the assistance of fellow craftsman Keith Loomis, Ron
produces stained glass panels whose designs are inspired by the scenic Brown County surroundings.
Dogwood blossoms, oak leaves, and humming-birds are common motifs in their work, and they are often accented with
beveled glass.
His hot glass work, which began as an off-season experiment, has evolved into a line of
distinctive floral and abstract dichroic paperweights.
